McClenaghan is a tall left-arm medium-fast bowler, who plays first-class cricket for the team Auckland. He made his ODI debut against South Africa in 2013. in the match, he took four wickets and became the second New Zealand player to take four wickets on debut.

In 2017, McClenaghan has opted out of a central contract with New Zealand Cricket and has chosen to play T20 leagues overseas.
