Gawli constructed his debut in Club Football with FC Cochin, a club from Kerala, and achieved the team a win in the Kerala Football League. After that, he left FC Cochin to join Churchill Brothers Club from Goa, India, in 2000. Gawli remained with the Club for three years and got the Club a win in the Goan League.
In 2003 He left Churchill Brothers and singed Kingfisher East Bengal Club and assisted the team in victories such as ASEAN Club Championship 2003 and National Football League (NFL). After that, In the year 2005, he moved to Mahindra United and proved to be one of the powerful players of the Club. While performing for Mahindra United, Mahesh also grabbed three Defender of the Year awards in a row.
In 2006 Mahesh Gawli left Mahindra United and joined the Dempo club, where he saw the most victorious phase of his Football career. Gawli was a part of the squad which won two League titles in a row and reached the Semi-Final stage of the AFC Cup championship 2008. Dempo club has been the only Indian Club to have achieved that achievement to date.
He announced his retirement from football in December 2011 after completing a 12-year-old international career.

Gawli represented India in the AFC U-16 Championship in 1996 held in Thailand and was included in the Asian All-Star U-16 team. Gawli soon constructed his international debut in the pre-Olympic qualifier against Thailand in 1999 and bonded his place in the Indian team.
Mahesh Gawli has been representing India since 2001. Along with India, he achieved the LG Cup and various SAFF Cups. Mahesh was part of the recorded Nehru Cup 2007 success in which he was the man of the match in the final against Syria. Gawli was also a significant part of the successful India squad at the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup.
On 26 December 2011, He announced his retirement, almost 2-weeks after winning the 2011 SAFF tournament with India.
