England all-rounder David Willey has announced that he will retire from professional cricket at the end of the 2023 World Cup. The 33-year-old has played 57 ODIs and 44 T20Is for England, and has been a key part of the team’s white-ball success in recent years.
Willey made his international debut in 2015, and quickly established himself as a versatile player who could contribute with both bat and ball. He was a member of the England team that won the 2019 Cricket World Cup, and played a key role in the team’s recent T20 World Cup victory.
Willey’s decision to retire comes after the ECB decided not to offer him a central contract for the 2023-24 cycle. The all-rounder said that he was “grateful for the opportunity to have represented England at the highest level,” and that he would “cherish the memories” of his international career.
