In 1993, 1997 and 1999, he formed a profitable attacking partnership with Bhaichung Bhutia for the Indian national team as he performed in the striker position. After Vijayan was awarded the Indian player, becoming him the first Performer to have won the award several times. After completing one year with the club, he moved once more to Mohun Bagan in 1998, his 3rd spell with the club, and returned to F.C. Kochin in 1999. After some time, he joined East Bengal in 2005, his last professional football club as a working footballer. Vijayan left East Bengal in the year 2006. In the 2020-21 Season, I.M. Vijayan performed for the Gokulam Kerala Futsal Team.

I. M. Vijayan began his career with the Kerala police, and after that, he shifted with Mohun Bagan. He returned to Kerala Police in 1992 and hit back to Mohun Bagan the upcoming year. Vijayan also played for East Bengal club, JCT and F.C. Kochin in his club career.
