Former Indian Test Player Wasim Jaffer was clear about who should bat at No. 4 in Shreyas Iyer‘s without in the ODI series against New Zealand. Jaffer believes Suryakumar Yadav is a straight swap for the Primary ODI in Hyderabad, beginning on Wednesday (January 18).
Despite his fantastic performances in T20I cricket, Suryakumar Yadav has effort to find a place in India’s one-day side due to an established middle-order. With Shreyas Iyer out of the 50-over series against the Kiwis because of a back injury, the right-hander rests in pole place to take his spot.
UPDATE – Team India batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series against New Zealand due to a back injury.
Rajat Patidar has been named as his replacement.

Talking on ESPN Cricinfo, Jaffer told he reckons Suryakumar will bat at No. four. He believed that Ishan Kishan should come in at no.5 and take the gloves in KL Rahul’s absence.
Jaffer also hopes to see Washington Sundar as the 2nd spinner and specified that the pace-bowling unit should go ahead unmodified.
“I believe Suryakumar Yadav will arrive for Shreyas Iyer as it is a straight swap. At number 5, I consider Ishan Kishan will arrive. He will likely take the gloves as well since KL is not there. Since Axar is not there in the bowling line-up, I would go for Washington Sundar.”
He added:
“Since New Zealand have enough left-handers, I would select Washington Sundar with Kuldeep Yadav because they both can take the ball away from the left-handers. The 3 fast bowlers – Umran, Siraj, and Shami – look if they want to rest anybody. If they want to go full-fledged, these are the 3 seamers along with Hardik Pandya and the 2 spinners.”
The number one T20I batter has so far performed 17 ODIs and averages a simple 29.84 with 2 fifties.
However, Kishan took the cricketing society by storm when he clobbered a double-century in the 3rd ODI against Bangladesh in December 2022. The duo also heated the bench in the earlier 3-0 series win against Sri Lanka.
