Shubman Gill replaces former Indian opener KL Rahul for the third test series out of the four-match against Australia, scheduled on 1st march 2023.
Rahul was getting a lot of hate for failing to take advantage of the continuous chances given to him in the Indian Test series his highest score in the last 10 test innings was 23, creating a meagre average of 12.5, making his place untenable as India will have to chase a third successive victory to seal its place in the finals of the world test championship in June.
23-year-old Subham Gill has already made a century in all three formats, and his last seven international knocks include four hundred. The change was almost inevitable.
“With all due respect to Rahul, it is time to play Shubmam,” says former opener Srikkanth “you can’t keep a player waiting when he is in the form of his life.”
This is Shubman Gill’s first test match for the year. The last test was against Bangladesh in December 2022. His sitting on the bench seemed absurd
The team management continuously backed Rahul despite his performance, mainly because India was in a good position in the ongoing border- Gavaskar trophy, but now Rahul had become a significant concern for Rohit Sharma’s team as with the compulsory victory needed for sealing India’s position in the World Test Championship in June the changes where needed to be made.
Another change was also announced, along with the change between ShubmanGill and KL Rahul. Rohit Sharma said, “we have rested Shami, and Umesh comes in.”
