Former England batsman Ian Bell has reminded his great ‘Spirit of Cricket’ experience with former Indian caption, MS Dhoni when the 2011 series going.
It was the second Test of the fourth match rubber. At the time of Tea on the 3rd day, Eoin Morgan creased ball on the leg-side which was interrupted just short of the boundary by a dive Praveen Kumar. Ian Bell and Morgan sure it was a boundary and ran back to the tent for the period.
Despite that, Kumar then threw the ball to MS Dhoni, who passed it to Abhinav Mukund to remove the bails. Much to the shame of Ian Bell, who was batting at 137, the umpires ruled on the side of MS Dhoni’s appeal and the batsman was run out.
The run-out attracted huge booing and taunting from the English crowd and prompted some discussion across both camps. MS Dhoni ultimately withdrew his appeal and permitted Ian Bell to continue. The batsman went on to score 156 runs and Dhoni was awarded the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Year for his action.f
Nevertheless, he was involved in some animated talks with the umpire after the incident, Ian Bell accepted on Thursday that the bizarre runout was his fault. He recognized that he ran back too early without confirming the boundary.
Yes, it’s interesting. When I look back to that, I mean, I must have been hungry or something because I literally just belted for the pavilion when I thought it was four if it was either way around, I would have been safe and we would have been fine. But yeah, they obviously got Dhoni a ‘Spirit of the Game’ award for the decade or something like that. But yeah [it was] a mistake on my behalf, should never do that,” Ian Bell told The Grade Cricketer’s YouTube channel.

MS Dhoni was lauded by all and several for his judgment, which was made despite his squad trailing by a game in the series. Ultimately, India lost the second Test by 319 runs and the series 4-0.
